Monday 20 May is the last day to get the vote out for Jo McNeill’s General Secretary campaign.
Jo’s done this before, she campaigned for General Secretary in 2016, when she polled 5,586 to Sally Hunt’s 8,138 of a total of 13,724 votes. That’s more than 40% of the vote. The turnout was a disappointing 13.7% of eligible voters. Jo began her epic hustings journey from the length and breadth of England, to Northern Ireland, to Scotland and in spirit (via Skype) to Wales 3 weeks ago. One of her aims was to increase turnout, so wherever she went she asked members to vote, to vote for her but most importantly to vote.
When she launched her campaign for General Secretary, Jo undertook to visit all the branches to which she was invited because she believes that UCU must be a member led, grassroots Union. During the past 3 weeks Jo has visited twenty branches, Skyped to the Cardiff hustings while marching for Palestine, and attempted to Skype Southampton UCU hustings on her way Ulster. Bit of an IT glitch at Southampton unfortunately. Speaking and answering questions at hustings, large and small, is one of the many ways that a candidate for General Secretary can gain a sense of what matters to members. Of course Jo has a strong sense of what matters from her years of work as an activist, of doing extensive case work, national committee work and as an elected negotiator as well as being President of Liverpool University UCU. This is why Jo has campaigned so hard to be General Secretary – she knows what members need, from legal support when they have been discriminated against or victimised, to decent pay, terms and conditions, and a pension we can live on in retirement.
If you haven’t already voted – and EVERY vote matters – please post your vote tomorrow. At the latest Tuesday, with a first class stamp, blanking out the 2nd class frank with a thick black pen.
